This post is a follow up to one that I posted several months ago regarding sabbath keeping. I’ve prayed that Yah would show me the truth about the timing of the sabbath. My journey has led me through S-nday and S-tday sabbath keeping and into keeping sabbath based upon the lunar solar calendar.
My study is by no means complete but here is an update so far …
The Gregorian Calendar Is Not Yah’s Calendar
Yah said that He gave the sun, moon, and stars for times and seasons (Psalm 104:19). These times and seasons are not just applicable to our weekly sabbaths, but they are Yah’s time pieces for feast days and prophecy fulfillment.
I was shown that Yah does not adhere to the Gregorian calendar (solar based) but has a more permanent time piece in the heavens.
I Samuel 20:5 and I Samuel 20:24-27 indicate that the new moon is the beginning of a new month. Regardless of some naysayers that believe that the term “new moon” is a mistranslation of the term “new month,” there is evidence that the moon phases correspond with monthly time periods.
By observing Yah’s time piece in the sky, we cannot tell if we are at the end or beginning of a 30 day cycle by just looking at the sun. The sun appears to rise and set without any change in brightness or appearance.
The moon, however, changes in appearance every 30 days. We don’t have to rely on man’s calendar which is subject to man’s manipulation (Daniel 7:25). We can see that we are beginning a new month by the appearance of the first phase of the moon.
Moon’s First Phase: Dark Moon or Visible Crescent Moon?
I was recently challenged to pray about the definition of “the first phase of the moon” by a couple who keep the sabbath according to the lunar solar calendar but use the dark moon phase to mark the new moon or first phase of the moon. I had used the first visible crescent moon as the new moon marker.
It really is not a serious dilemma at all, but it is a topic that requires interpretation by the Ruach ha Kodesh. It’s interesting because this topic ties into the upcoming Fall Feast Days – Feast of Trumpets, Day of Atonement, and Feast of Tabernacles as well as the Master Yahushua’s return. This is what I was shown. Pray about it and see if it bears witness to the Ruach ha Kodesh in you.
Enoch: The Witness
This quote comes from the Book of Enoch Chapter 73– Book of the Heavenly Luminaries,
“And after this law I saw another law dealing with the smaller luminary, which is named the Moon. And her circumference is like the circumference of the heaven, and her chariot in which she rides is driven by the wind, and light is given to her in (definite) measure. And her rising and setting change every month: and her days are like the days of the sun, and when her light is uniform (i.e. full) it amounts to the seventh part of the light of the sun. And thus she rises. And her first phase in the east comes forth on the thirtieth morning: and on that day she becomes visible, and constitutes for you the first phase of the moon on the thirtieth day together with the sun in the portal where the sun rises.”(book of enoch, ch73, http://www.ccel.org/c/charles/otpseudepig/enoch/ENOCH_3.HTM )
According to this account, the first phase of the moon (as seen from the east) comes forth on the 30th morning and constitutes the 30th day together with the sun. The next day would then be the first day of a new monthly period.
The Disciples As Witnesses
According to the gospel accounts of the Master Yahushua’s return (Matthew 24:29 and Mark 13:24) , several disciples asked the Master about the signs of his return and the end of the age. The Master explained to them about a tribulation period and the beginning of a judgment period which He allowed the apostle John to elaborate upon in the book of Revelation.
He said, immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun would be darkened, the moon would not give her light, the stars would fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.
I always focused on the stars falling from heaven and the powers of the heaven shaken as a time when the archangel Michael would throw the devil and his angels out of the heavenly realm (all 7 heavens). Those baddies would be earth bound and awaiting judgment.
I skimmed over the part of the moon darkening and just assumed that it meant a lunar eclipse of some sort; BTW- there are some predicted during 2014-2015 called the blood moon / tetrad moon eclipses.
Anyway, I did not notice the applicability of these verses to the question of keeping sabbath by the lunar solar calendar until I met this couple that use the dark moon as indication of the “new moon.” It is technically called the astronomical new moon.
The 2 Witnesses of Revelation
The darkening of the moon as spoken about in the gospels of Matthew and Mark is significant because it marks the end of the tribulation period and the beginning of judgment (Matthew 24:29). The two witnesses seen by John in Revelation 11:3 have power to preach for 1,260 days exactly.
In the solar calendar that we use, a year is 365/366 days. In a strictly lunar calendar, there are about 354/355 days. In Yah’s calendar, a year is 360 days. The 1,260 days in which the two witnesses preach is evenly divided by 360 to total 3.5 years.
I believe that this 3.5 year period is the tribulation period, and the last 3.5 years is the judgment period.
Additionally, Daniel 7:25 speaks about the tribulation period – “and he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall persecute the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: they shall be given into his hand for a time (I believe = 1 year), times (2 years), and the dividing of time (.5 year).”
Since the timing is exactly 3.5 years for the tribulation period (not 1 day more or less), we can know that the correct moon phase may be determined by looking at this scripture. This supernatural event, which comes immediately after the tribulation period, causes the sun to be darkened and the moon to not give light.
It is not just the normal dark moon phase because the passage indicates that we should see the moon’s light at its first visible phase at that point but because of this event we will not be able to see it. Also, the moon reflects the light of the sun so when the sun supernaturally darkens the moon’s light is abnormally affected. During a normal dark moon phase, the sun is not supernaturally darkened.
If the astronomical new moon is the beginning of a new period, then the passage in Matthew 24:29 would not make sense as a supernatural event since immediately after that definite 3.5 year period the moon would naturally be dark.
If the first visible crescent moon is the beginning of a new period, the passage in Matthew 24:29 would make more sense as a supernatural event because after the dark moon the moon should give its light as the first visible crescent. The prophecy states that it will not give its light; the implication is that it is expected to give its light immediately after the end of the 3.5 years but it will not because of supernatural circumstances.
I’m aware that the first visible crescent may not be visible to the naked eye for sometimes 2 days, but I believe when it is sighted, it should be done in the same geographic area from which Moses presented the covenant to the children of Israel.
We Are At the End of the Age
I pray that Yah has mercy and grace upon His people who seek to keep His commands and have the testimony of Yahushua. There are convincing arguments on both sides of the lunar sabbath keeping groups.
Someone at yourarmstoisrael.org wrote a good article with research on why they believe that the “dark moon” is the correct new moon. If you are interested in this topic, you should read convincing discussions from both groups only after prayer that the Ruach ha Kodesh will lead you to truth.
Also, remember Colossians 2:16,17– these things are types and shadows of things to come.
Our loving Abba knows that we are seeking His truths. I believe He likes for us to search the scriptures for answers and ask for the Ruach ha Kodesh to lead us to truths found in the Word. I believe blessings are obtained by getting answers as well as conducting scriptural research on topics like these.
Saints, we are almost at the finish line. Hallelujah!!!…so hang in there.
Shalom In The Master Yahushua!
